Inspired by the artwork of early Hawaiians, artist Joanne How creates Hawaiian quilt designs on Tapa. The Hawaiian quilt is a legacy item passed down across generations of Hawaiian families.
Tapa cloth was created and used by early Polynesians, made from the paper mulberry tree. The tree bark is beaten into thin sheets using an instrument called a Tapa beater.
Tapa had been used for centuries to make clothing and décor items, primarily for monarchs and ali’i. Tapa was also gifted during weddings and special occasions.
